“Koizora” is a love story that was originally published on the popular cell phone site Mahou no iRando. It was authored by new writer Mika, and is based on her own experiences. The story was released in book form last October, selling more than a million copies in its first month.
The story revolves around Mika (named after the author), who falls in love with her classmate, Hiroki, upon entering high school. But over the course of the novel, she ends up suffering through many trials, such as rape, abortion, and betrayal.
Cast:
  • Aragaki Yui
  • Miura Haruma

My thoughts:

Ever since I watched 14 sai no haha right after Koizora, I could always draw connections between the two widely popularized productions. And somehow, I was right. Miura starred in 14 sai no haha back in 2006, using his dark, tamed hair to compliment his studious nature.

However in Koizora, Miura prances on the silverscreen, in a dirty bleached blond colour that seems to resembles like frozen snow under the lighting. It is not as recognizable to viewers like myself who viewed Koizora RIGHT before 14 sai no haha that the two male leads are actually one person. I was flabbergasted when I realized it awhile ago.

I’m going to base my opinion on what tudou.com has showed me without subtitles. So, I’ll be honest. Koizora is kind of…shall I say, slow-paced?

Unlike 14 sai no haha, with it’s rich, inter- winded music score in the background, it still holds my attention. Koizora, however, falls under the comparison of that the new latest Matsumoto Jun movie. A silent film. Aside from the lovely ending theme done by Mr.Children, I didn’t particularly enjoy it as much as 14 sai no haha.

The relationship between Aragaki and Miura seems a bit too stereotypical to me, and it lacks any real depth, other than he was her first love and she could never allow herself to forget him. Cliched, to be exact.

Many viewers have raved over the mere concept of teen pregnancy and first love. However, it failed to bring to tears. It even failed to force me on the edge of tears as 14 sai no haha had demonstrated.

Thus, the final verdict. Once again, this is a chick flick. I’ll definitely recommend this to those who enjoy a good ol’ high school drama. However, be forewarned, it may bore you to tears.=D
